Liverpool win 2-0

Former European champions Liverpool and Juventus have begun their attempts to reach the second-tier Europa League with 2-0 victories.

Roy Hodgson guided Liverpool to a 2-0 victory over Rabotnicki in his first game since becoming manager four weeks ago. Liverpool won through two goals by striker David Ngog despite the absence of star players including Fernando Torres and Joe Cole.

Brazilian striker Amauri scored both goals for Juventus to give the Italian side victory over Shamrock Rovers of Ireland in the first leg of its third qualifying round match.

The winners after next week's second-leg matches will enter two-legged playoffs for a place in the tournament.
