Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has dimissed allegations that Steven Gerrard made a V sign towards referee Andre Marriner when the Reds were defeated by Wigan.

"Sometimes you move your fingers," Benitez told The Daily Mirror. "It was nothing. We are not considering it, it was nothing.

"All the players know they have to behave on the pitch. I was more worried about the silly fouls we were giving to Wigan."

He also insisted that he has reviewed a video tape of the match and found "there is no case to answer".

Liverpool are struggling to claim fourth spot after losing a game many expected them to win. And Wigan chairman Dave Whelan was critical of the club following their surprise victory.

"I do not know what is going on. I do not talk about Wigan," reiterates Benitez. "I prefer to concentrate on my team. He (Whelan) should talk about his own club."

Meanwhile, the FA has confirmed that the Liverpool captain will face no disciplinary action.
