Football fanatic dead after Euro 2012 marathon

A die-hard football fan from Changsha in Central China's Hunan Province has died from watching the Euro 2012 games on TV for a marathon 11 days and 11 nights.

The 26-year-old was known to be fit and healthy. He was a principal force on his college football team and continued to play the sport after graduation. He had been watching every Euro 2012 match from the start of the competition.

But on 19th June, he decided to go to a bar with his friends to watch the game between Italy and Ireland. Apparently, he downed more than a few beers before going home at 5am, showering and then heading to bed.

Seeing her son soundly asleep at last, his mother decided against waking him up until it was dinnertime. That's when she found out, it was all over for him.

"He was crazy," said his friends. "We rested sometimes, but he watched every game. He loved England and France. At the bar when we were cheering for Italy, he appeared tired probably because he didn't have enough sleep for days."

Dr Liu Zhiling said several factors led him to kick the bucket, including prolonged sleep deprivation, massive amounts of beer and cigarettes, a bath after drinking, as well as the low temperature because he slept in an air-conditioned bedroom. "He died from low blood sugar and slow blood circulation."
