Drogba may not head east to Shanghai

Nicolas Anelka has hinted Didier Drogba will not be joining him for a big payday at Shanghai Shenhua this summer.

Chelsea ace Drogba is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a move to join his former strike partner at the Chinese club.

However, since Roberto Di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas as manager at Stamford Bridge in March, Drogba has re-established himself as one of Chelsea’s key players.

He has been instrumental in their run to both the Champions League and FA Cup finals.

Anelka confirmed he had spoken to Drogba and the Ivorian star had reached a decision over his future, but that it was “inconvenient” to tell people what that might be.

According to a Chinese website, Anelka said: “If Drogba chooses to stay with Chelsea, it would prove that Drogba wanted to stay and Chelsea also wanted to keep him.

“If Drogba cannot come to Shanghai, then there are no regrets because the world still has many other fine players.”

Anelka joined the Chinese Super League side in January and was named player-coach shortly before Shenhua sacked French head coach Jean Tigana last month.
