RM600 fine for lack of protein in belacan

Tests showed that the shrimp paste packed and distributed by Rohani Ali, 56 of Dungun, Terengganu lacked the needed pungency - it had an insufficient amounts of protein.

reported that she was charged in the Dungun magistrate's court on Wednesday with violating the Food Regulations 1985.

The law stipulates that shrimp paste should contain at least 25 per cent protein. Samples of her belacan showed only 23.75 per cent protein content.

Rohani who had been selling 400gm packets of the shrimp paste at RM 2.50 each, pleaded guilty.

Her husband Dzurudin Abdullah, 62, paid the fine.
