Samaritans rescue sick baby

The baby girl who suffers a life threatening birth defect and was left without medical treatment at a hospice in China, has been taken away by Good Samaritans.

Five volunteers had gone to the Tianjin Children's Hospital and took her away without permission.

They then sent her to Beijing United Family Hospital, where she is now drinking milk and receiving proper medical treatment, China Daily reported.

The newborn, who has yet to be named, was abandoned by her parents after they found her condition "hopeless".

She is suffering from a congenital imperforate anus, swollen kidneys and heart disease since she was born on Jan 15.

Her parents gave up on her 13 days later and left her at the hospice without medical treatment.

"I read about the baby in the newspaper and decided to take her away because I was afraid that she would not survive without proper medical care,” said one of the volunteers, who asked to be known as Shenhai Shuiyao.

She said the girl was skinny with her arms and legs spread out like twigs, and her belly swollen like a purple watermelon.

"She is much better now. Her belly is smaller after the doctor inserted a tube to help her defecate.

Shenhai Shuiyao said a surgeon at the hospital told her the baby could be treated because her condition was not serious.

The Child Welfare League of China - a Beijing-based charity group - and the volunteers intend to share the baby’s medical expenses.

They also appealed to the baby's parent to give their consent for the child’s treatment, failing which, they would sue the couple for crimes of abandonment and indirect intentional homicide.
