Warm hearted millionaire meets ice-cold death
Multi-millionaire Du Guanghua has become a hero after he jumped into the river on a winter's night, to save his drowning employee in China.
The worker Zhao Shengxi, 20, was pulled to safety by Du, However, Du, the steel wire wholesaler was nowhere to be found. The rescue team only recovered his body some seven hours later.
According to Zhejiang Daily, Du had treated his employees to a Dongzhi (Winter Solstice) Festival dinner at a steamboat restaurant in Yongkang of Zhejiang province on the 21st December.
As he and two other staff were leaving the restaurantl, the drunken Zhao, who was new to Du's firm, slipped and fell into the river. Without a second thought, Du jumped into the ice-cold, below 10 degree Celsius water.
Du managed to reach Zhao, who was struggling, and attempted to drag him to safety.
At this point, chef Xu Junfeng from the steamboat shop, arrived and also jumped in to give Du a hand.
As Xu and several others pulled Zhao out of the water, Du could not be located. A rescue team comprising police and firemen was called to search for the businessman.
The 31-year-old Du has been remembered as a man who was hardworking, humble, loved to joke and was always willing to help others. He was so friendly that all his employees called him "Hua Ge" (Brother Hua).
Du also helped his neighbour Hu Yueqing, who runs a kitchenware shop, to deliver goods. "He never went to mahjong games or karaoke bars, and always remembered to send holiday gifts to neighbours and employees," Hu said.
Zhao expressed remorse for his careless behaviour and blamed himself for Du's unfortunate death.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday. The public, moved by Du's selfless actions, laid flowers beside the river where he drowned. The city officials have also paid tribute to Du and sent condolences to his family while awarding Du and Xu the Good Samaritan award, City Express reported.
