'Kony' director gives Oprah post-meltdown interview

Kony 2012 filmmaker Jason Russell, who suffered a very public meltdown in March after drawing attention to the atrocities of Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony following the release of his video, will appear in an interview with Oprah Winfrey on the next episode of Oprah's Next Chapter.

The episode, which will air on OWN on 7th October at 9pm, will also include Russell's wife Danica, who will discuss her husband's meltdown as well, an OWN spokeswoman said told TheWrap on Monday.

Russell, a co-founder of the non-profit organisation Invisible Children, was placed in a medical facility for care after being detained by San Diego police, who said that he was acting irrationally and erratically.

Though reports indicated that Russell engaged in public nudity, masturbation and vandalism during his rampage in the streets of San Diego, police said that there was nothing to substantiate the reports of masturbation and vandalism.

Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord's Resistance Army, is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

Following Russell's detainment, his wife blamed the incident on "reactive psychosis".

"Though new to us, the doctors say this is a common experience given the great mental, emotional and physical shock his body has gone through in these last two weeks," Danica wrote in a blog post earlier this year.

"Even for us, it's hard to understand the sudden transition from relative anonymity to worldwide attention—both raves and ridicules, in a matter of days."

Russell's video about Kony drew more than 100 million viewers on the Internet within weeks of its release, but his organisation was also met with criticism from detractors who claimed that Invisible Children supports the Ugandan government's army, and brushes aside the Ugandan army's own atrocities.
