New iPhone app tests for blood alcohol level

Motorists can check if they are too drunk to drive thanks to a new iPhone app.

The Breathaleyes application records the rapid eye movement of the user to test how boozey they are — and developers claim that the app is almost as accurate as a breathalyser.

But road safety experts are warning people not to rely on the 69p software to measure whether they should get behind the wheel.

Andrew Howard, head of road safety at the AA, said: "There are a number of problems with using this app.

"Blood alcohol levels do not peak until 40 minutes after drinking, so you might be fine to drive when you take the test, but over the limit when stopped by a police officer.

"Also, there is the human factor. If the test says you're okay to drive, people might think they are all right to have another drink, but then that might put them in trouble.

"My advice would be if you're drinking, then don't risk it by getting behind the wheel."

Developer Xplor Apps LLC claims the test is accurate to within 0.02 per cent of a breathalyser.

It works by recording the eye for ten seconds and measuring the rapid eye movement.

The movement is involuntary and happens more if someone has been drinking.

The developers warn that the app is strictly for entertainment purposes. Co-creator Rob Andrews said: "We think it's a great tool to help people make informed decisions when it comes to alcohol safety."
