Taiwan farmer grows world's hottest chilli

A Taiwan farmer has claimed to have grown the world's hottest chilli, unseating an Australian who said two months ago that his chilli was the most fiery.

Yeh Wu-shun said his red pepper scores about 1.5 million Scoville heat units, hotter than the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T, unveiled by Australian Marcel de Wit. It scored 1.46 million Scoville heat units.

Yeh's laboratory determined the heat unit of his chilli and he said he would send it to the New Mexico State University laboratory for certification in autumn.

In the meantime, he planned to debut his chilli Sunday at a chilli-eating contest in Taipei.

"The person who will eat the most of this hot chilli will win my antique Jaguar," he said by phone from his farm in Ilan county in north-eastern Taiwan.

To be eligible for the car, participants must sign a statement declaring they are responsible for the consequences of eating the chilli.

De Wit had said in April that cooking with his chilli required protective clothing, including a face mask. "If you don't wear gloves, your hands will be pumping heat for two days," he said.

Yeh, 46, grows 150 varieties of chillis. He makes chilli sauce and pickled chillies and exports chilli seeds and plants.

If this guy grows his chillis so hot and market them... who on earth is going to buy them? Even preparing a dish using his produce is such a hassle... Must send this guy for commercial lessons...

Okay so where are pictures of his plants? Where are pictures of the peppers? I see 6 varieties of different peppers in his hand in photo that I recognize. None of them are high heat. He did his own testing so anyone can doctor a test. Is everyone going to do this now and lie about a record to get press and make money?? Unless there are multiple tests done by multiple labs it has no credibility. Without duplication there is no science and no record. You can see pictures of everything I grow on my website. Lots of pictures. And if I had a record I would have even more pictures. See for yourself www.superhotchiles.com

The pepper race is getting hotter..... pun intended. Trinidad Scorpions were only on top for 1 year if this proves correct. I'm still growing Bhut Jolokia peppers. The sign on that part of my garden says "weapons grade veggies". I'd like to see some pictures though.
