Michael Jackson, is the number one global music icon.

The late King of Pop received almost 100,000 votes in the run to be become one of the Top Five Iconic Musicians.

Michael emerged top in the event, jointly organised by CNN and music magazine Songlines.

A total of 20 globally renowned musicians from the past 50 years were shortlisted in the race.

The other Top Five Iconic Musicians are British pop group The Beatles, late Cantopop sensation Leslie Cheung, rock 'n' roller Elvis Presley and Reggae godfather Bob Marley.

No female artists made it into the list, although seven female singers including Madonna and Teresa Teng were shortlisted.
