MPO presents Stephen Rahman Hughes

Stephen Rahman Hughes sings gorgeously

Stephen Rahman Hughes sings gorgeously

By Noorsila Abd Majid

Stephen Rahman Hughes wears many hats. Come this weekend, the multi-talented British actor/singer/choreographer will collaborate with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) in a musical extravaganza at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP).

Themed a Broadway night, Stephen will be flexing his vocal chords on classics like Over The Rainbow, West Side Story - Maria, Journey Home and Don't Cry For Me Argentina.

Trust us, the droolicious British-Malay hunk sounds as good as he looks.

"I enjoy singing as much as acting and dancing," Stephen told The Daily Chilli. "The last time I sang was two months ago. I did a jazz gig in London."

But forget about the 40-year-old doing any songs from his smashing musical, Puteri Gunung Ledang. Stephen says he still can't sing or speak in Bahasa Malaysia well. "The next time I come to Malaysia for a long stay, I will hire a private tutor to teach me Bahasa. I seriously want to improve my Malay."

Instead, he will do a cover of Susan Boyle's I Dreamed A Dream.

Tickets to his performance on March 12 and 13 are priced at RM95, RM75, RM55 and RM25. Showtime begins at 8.30pm.

There is a matinee show on March 14. Tickets will go for RM85, RM65, RM40 and RM20. Showtime is at 3pm.

Oh golly, the dude who re-defined undersinging comes again. MPO, why can't we get artistes the calibre of Angela Gheorghiu, Vivica Genaux, Joyce DiDonato, Simone Kermes and, God forbid, Anna Netrebko? You'd save so much on acoustics because these ladies WON'T REQUIRE MICS, and - more importantly - their art is so much more beautiful than what Mr. Hughes has to offer.
