Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier, Hermès, all the top fashion designers and couture houses have at one time or another been inspired by Indian culture, colours and style. For 23-year-old Malaysian designer Krishnan Bahadoor, those references hit a lot closer to home.

Krishnan is of Indian-Nepalese descent, and his fascination with the rich heritage of those nations helped him beat 22 other graduates at the recent TAR College Fashion Graduation Show at KL's Zebra Square to come out on top.

From the minute his models stepped on the runway in his exotic womenswear, as AR Rahman's ethereal music provided the soundtrack to his designs, the crowd was cheering faster than you could say jai-ho!

Krishnan's muse, model Syakella Jazmyn-Saiden, said she hadn't expected his outfits to be so colourful, but she was very pleased that they were so detailed and well thought out right down to the sequins. "He put a lot of effort into them and I am flattered to wear them," she said.

"I was inspired by the rainbow colours of rangoli (a folk art from India)," he told Daily Chilli. To hear more from Krishnan and his models, watch the video below.

Bumiputra Designers Association president and menswear designer Bon Zainal lauded Krishnan's style, calling them "imaginative" and saying he would like to see the collection refined for the masses.

Bold colours seemed the theme of the show as Karen Cheong placed second with her "Galaxy" clothes highlighted in purple, gold and grey, while third place finisher Jennifer Pang used blue and grey for her "Submerged City" outfits.

Other honours given out were the Young Designers Association award to YK Lim—with Krishnan also taking the runner-up spot—and the TARC-BDA Future Face award to Shir Tee. All three will get the chance to show their work at Malaysia International Fashion Week in November.
