British rapper M.I.A sets tongues wagging with her latest gesture at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show.

While Madonna has earlier promised to keep the show clean when she took the stage at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show, one of her guest artistes had broken that promise.

No, it's not a wardrobe malfunction and it took place for less than a second. Still, British rapper M.I.A. sparked controversy when she gave the finger when performing alongside the Queen of Pop in the latter's new single Give Me All Your Luvin'. Also with them was Nicki Minaj.

Check out M.I.A's gesture in this video.

It happened so quickly that National Broadcasting Company (NBC), which broadcasts the game, tried to cut away but was too late. The network launched into damage control mode in no time and released the following statement: "We apologize for the inappropriate gesture that aired during halftime. It was a spontaneous gesture that our delay system caught late."

National Football League followed suit and issued a stern statement: "There was a failure in NBC's delay system. The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans."
